Crime writer with a slab of ice in his heart

Georges Simenon’s beefy but sympathetic Maigret – whose exploits are now being republished – was an exercise in fantastical self-projection by AN Wilson.

Thanks. Thoroughly enjoyed this, including the pic of Michael Gambon in the TV role. Interesting switch that Simenon would create a hero so much more prosaic than himself. I sense among most genre writers that the opposite is the case.

I MUST watch the Gambon show now as I've been a fan of Maigret for many, many years. And that bio they mentioned sounds like a rip roaring look back.

There are some excellent French Maigret series and movies out there. Those with Jean Gabin and Pierre Richard in the title role come particularly to mind. Great little books though. Excellent way to learn French...

Sorry, that should have been Jean Richard. Bruno Cremer also did a great job.
