My wife has read somewhere that this may be a set-up and all part of a movie he's working on. He does seem to crack a smile a couple times during the show. Whatever the case, it is odd.
He recently "retired" from acting to become a Hip-Hop artist but apparently it's some mock-umentary showing how obsessed people can become with movie stars. Casey Affleck is following him around taping all of these antics so I would say it was a gag.
If you want to see a Letterman appearance they was probably a gag but looked pretty damn real, check out Crispin Glover's appearance back in the 80's. Andy Kaufman-esque but Dave didn't seem too happy about it.
if it is a gag, how utterly droll. deride the public and the industries that make you millions? oh. harharhar. stop. you're killing me with your savage wit and CliffNote intellectualism. hey, you know what would be a great gag, joaquin and casey? how about we beat you unconscious and toss you two into the tar pits on Wilshire? maybe smooth over the surface with a hockey stick so no one notices? hey, that's comedy.

I don't typically watch the Late show but that was one of the most bizarre interviews I've ever seen. Man, what was he on.

O.k. that makes sense then. Still a very funny appearance and I do remember that Crispin Glover interview. Has he ever been back on?
I think he came back on a few times after that.

Jacob, I've just returned from YouTube land and he did return in 1990 and sorta explained his notorious appearance. Weird dude.
Kieran, You're probably right because it's not as funny when it's a set-up and seems quite pretentious.
His whole schtick lately has been just plain weird.
He makes me miss River.
