The Passing of David Price

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David Price on March 1, 2011 and have decided to re-run his "last story" (Angel of Mercy, first published in January 2010) as a tribute to him.

On March 3, 2011, his short story was selected as a finalist for a 2011 Derringer Award.

Condolences can be sent to friend William Swank at wgswank@san.rr.com.

I hope everyone will take another look at this award-nominated story and leave a comment.

From Bill Swank:

Dave signed this for my son, Billy, when he was two or three years old. Dave went to Clairemont High School in San Diego, but didn't play football until he went to Cal Western where he made Little All-American. Billy went to Clairemont where he lettered in football.

Dave is in the back row, far right...

I am deeply saddened by this news. Thank you David for letting our online community know of his passing. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Price, both via email and over the telephone on two of his stories. David Price was a thoughtful and conscientious writer, with a deep knowledge of crime and the penal system as well as law enforcement. He will be deeply missed.
Sincerely,
Elaine Ash

I, too, am saddened to hear this. I recall very much enjoying "Angel of Mercy" the first time around, and I can think of no greater act of remembrance than to call attention to his work.

Such sad news. While I'm happy that David Price's recent work has attracted recognition he richly deserves, I'll be so sorry to miss reading more from him.

Damn shame, David seemed like a good man and he was a hell of a fine writer

My condolences go to David Price's friends and family. I can say nothing to cure their grief. His ideas, however, will continue to breathe as long as there are readers in the world.

What a serious blow to all of us who knew David or who just enjoyed his writing. My best wishes go to his family at this tough time. He will be remembered.

Sad when a writer dies and you wonder about all the work he might have produced. But I'm pretty sure there's a big coffee shop in Heaven, with endless refills, and well-lit tables where he can sit and pen some new tales.

I've read enough of David's work to know he spent a great deal of time doing something he loved. My condolences to the family.

This is heartbreaking news. Thanks for letting us all know. There are never so many good writers that we can spare one as good as David.

I'm so sorry David couldn't stay with us a little longer. Even though he was relatively new to writing short stories, it's obvious he had a lot of talent and a lot to contribute to crime fiction. It's a deep loss to his family and friends, and to all of us.

My condolences to his family. It sounds like he left us at a much too early age.

Sad news indeed. Please add my condolences to David's family and friends. Donne says 'every man's death diminishes me' - and that feels so true especially for a writer who can affect us in his work, as David did with his Angel of Mercy story.

The beauty of words (and fiction) is they mirror the imagination of the living soul. And that will always be here. Much love to Mr. Price's family.

Love the football pix. I spent a lot of time in Chicago as a Bears fan-- it's great to see!

Best wishes,
Pat Harrington

I only knew of David from our mutual nominations and his stories I read there after. The more I find out about him, the more I realize that while the web has introduced many of us to one another, we haven't really met. It would have been great to bump into him at a conference or convention, to shake his hand, and to say 'Great work.'
