Marlowe DVD review here. Great film worth buying for Bruce Lee's scenes and Rita Moreno's sexy dance number. I always felt Marlowe was a little misplaced in the 1960s but overall I liked the film.
I thought Garner did a good job here. And indeed Marlowe was misplaced in the sixties, just as the Mitchum remake of THE BIG SLEEP transferred to England was an incredibly bad idea.

ReplyDeleteYeah what were they thinking with SLEEP?! Especially after they did so well with Mitchum's FAREWELL MY LOVELY.
ReplyDeleteDidn't Jimmy Caan play Marlowe on television?
ReplyDeleteI have no memory of Bruce Lee in this one. Have to rent it again.
ReplyDeleteDan, Caan played Phillip Marlowe in a 1990s HBO film. It was based on the last novel and is called POODLE SPRINGS.
ReplyDeletePatti, There's a great scene where Lee destroys Marlowe's office.
...and the film seems almost like a pilot for The Rockford Files.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen this one, but I've got in my Netflix queue. I'll watch anything with James Garner. He rarely erred when choosing his roles.
ReplyDeleteThat pretty much was always my take, Evan.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Naomi. And he has had a helluva run from the 1950s until today.
