There is a wonderful article on Bass Reeves over at The Art of Manliness. Bass has long been a hero of mine and the inspiration for my Gideon Miles character.
This was super! I've been working on genealogy in Arkansas and reading a lot of Indian history. This info was really fascinating. I'm going to track down the Bass Reeves movie. This is a hero that should NOT be forgotten! Thanks for bringing him to my attention.
As someone interested in the history of race relations, I found this solid reading. Thanks for the link. If you haven't seen it, you might be interested in the black western Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte made: BUCK AND THE PREACHER. Poitier plays the kind of cowboy hero that brings Bass Reeves and Gideon Miles to mind.
There's some fine reading there. Thanks for the link, David. As one of the comment said, Hollywood could make a fine movie about Bass!

ReplyDeleteDavid, Bass needs a top studio to bring in the story of his life.
ReplyDeleteJess, The link I have to the Art Burton book is a good place to start.
Ron, Terrific movie and Poitier is in top form there. But, then again, when isn't he?
I was reading a lot about him when I was working on Killing Trail. Definitely a fascinating character.
ReplyDeleteI learned quite a few new facts in this article.
